Approval for 2021

September 23, 2020

Hello Donors,

We have been approved to work toward out service learning program to Ghana for Summer 2021 and we are now taking applications. The University will be monitoring COVID all along the way and I am communicating with our Ghana partners. Thank you all so much for your previous donations and I want you to know we will be using  it in  2021. Thanks to your generosity we will be able to enhance our teaching programs for wound care and preventing infections, malaria prevention, nutrition, infant hydration, reducing respiratory illnesses caused by cooking with wood, sickle cell anemia, schoolgirls menstrual health and hygiene, dental hygiene and a few other programs.  I plan to keep you up-to-date all the way through the trip, so expect more e-mails from me.

We appreciate you and thank you for your support,

A Letter to Our Donors

April 03, 2020

Dear Donors,

The thing I look forward to the most every year is taking nursing students to Bolgatanga, Ghana. Though it is a difficult trip physically, I do it because of the students. During this trip the young nursing students’ eyes are opened to a part of the world and a population that they have only read about and they see what it is like to not have access to health care. What they learn cannot be learned in a classroom.

We are all very sad and sorry to say that our trip to Ghana this year has been cancelled due to COVID-19 and there are no plans for a delayed trip. With the economic impact post-pandemic still unknown, we have no idea when things will really get back to normal. I have communicated with our clinical sites and community partners in Bolgatanga and they are as heartbroken as our students.

Every year I make sure that our students are protected in Ghana by taking personal protective equipment such as protective gowns, masks and hand sanitizers. These items have now been donated to our local hospital for use in this current health crisis. These items were donated to us by a representative of a local supply company, for which we are very appreciative.

Thank you all so much for your very generous gifts to our teaching projects for this study abroad program. Our gratitude is immeasurable. All donations will be used to purchase critical supplies such as coal cooking pots, malaria bed nets, and wound care kits, which will greatly amplify the impact of our projects when U of A nursing students can once again return to Ghana. Should the charitable gift you made to our campaign cause financial strain during this difficult time, please email giveback@uark.edu.

This is the third year we have held a FundRAZOR like this. Each year, the donations we receive make our teaching projects more successful and make a difference for hundreds of people in these Bolgatanga villages. Everyone who has given to this program will have a lasting impact on the families who live there.

Thank you, again, for your generosity and support. Please take care.

Sincerely,

A Huge Thank You!

March 18, 2020

We are incredibly humbled by the outpouring of support for our teaching projects in West Africa. Your donations will allow us to educate individuals about common health issues and improve their overall health literacy. Because of your generosity, we are able to purchase items like mosquito nets for newborns, antibiotic ointments to include in wound care kits, many coal pots that will reduce the prevalence of respiratory illnesses and so much more. In addition, we are excited to share that between students and their families, friends and faculty, we will collect close to 500 reusable sanitary pads for our new project, "Keeping Girls in School". We cannot believe how quickly we reached our goal of $5,000! Our team is so grateful and appreciative to have your support!!

Starting Strong

March 05, 2020

Thank you all for contributing to our project and supporting us from the start! We appreciate and value your involvement in the work that we will be able to do because children and families will be impacted greatly with your donation! We hope you can share our mission and our web page with those around you so we can continue to grow our outreach and improve the possibilities for those that will be reached by our services. We are so grateful to announce that Readers.com has supported our project by recently donating 300 pairs of reading glasses to assist in our vision screenings of older adults while on the trip. Thank you!

$5

Every Sip Counts

A simple electrolyte solution can save a child with dehydration from dysentery and other diarrheal diseases. We will teach mothers when and how to use a syringe with solution to restore an infant's health. Your gift will help us buy the oral syringes and packets of solution.

$15

Smiles Are Contagious

Dental health is a worthy goal! Nursing students will lead a workshop on the importance of oral health with a demo on correct brushing techniques. Your help will allow us to distribute a toothbrush and toothpaste to each participant.

$25

Healing Hands

Villagers die every year from simple wound infections that are easily treatable with the correct supplies. Treating a wound after an injury is the first line of defense against infection! We will present high school age students with "Wound Care 101," arming them with knowledge on infections and treatments. Your generous donation will provide these students with wound care kits.

$35

Fight the Bite

Malaria can be prevented through education and a simple net! We will be working with village mothers to educate them on the prevention of malaria in the most vulnerable populations: infants and children. Help us fight this disease by providing a bed net for a child in need.

$45

Keeping Girls in School

Help us provide reusable sanitary products for young women in an effort to reduce barriers preventing them from attending school. Educated women are empowered women, and your gift can give them the opportunity to have a bright, successful future.

$55

Pots With a Purpose

Ineffective charcoal stoves result in prolonged exposure to high levels of toxic cooking smoke. This leaves women in Ghana stricken with illnesses like emphysema, lung cancer and bronchitis, which impacts their long term health. Through provided education and your support, ceramic coal pots that reduce cooking time and smoke production will be supplied. Last year we were able to reach 330 individuals and provide them with a new coal pot!

$180

Love Thy Neighbor "Bundle"

"Be the change you want to see in the world." Nobody said it better than Ghandi, and University of Arkansas nursing students are putting these words into action! Your support of $180 will provide a "bundle" with all the levels of care listed above. Your help will make a huge difference for a family in Ghana!

$500

Honor a Nurse/Nursing Student

This is the fourth year that University of Arkansas nursing students will be traveling to Ghana to educate and serve. Honor your favorite nurse or nursing student with a gift in their name, and we will send a card of thanks to let them know of your passion for their dedication!
